Our Formation
Matchbook Learning was formed in 2011 as a national non-profit school turnaround management organization, the first of its kind to turnaround our nation’s underperforming public schools using a student-centered, competency-based, blended model of school. We are the first and still only blended, competency based charter school model targeting schools in need of transformation. We believe transforming existing schools for the 21st-century represents our nation’s most pressing social and public sector challenge.
Our Mission
Our successful charter school turnarounds will be powerful proof points to transform the sector.
Our Vision
Our hope and vision is that if we can take schools that are underperforming and with our unique model and with those same students, enable that school to reach the top 20% or higher in say a five-year period, we can create powerful, compelling proof points to change our nation’s trajectory. Currently, no sustainable, scalable turnaround solution exists for our nation’s public schools. We intend to change that.
Our Strategy
The strategy of Matchbook Learning can be divided into three successive phases:
I. Direct Run Strategy (2014+)
Prove out our turnaround blended model in Newark, Detroit and hopefully Indianapolis in 2018. We hope to prove out our model over the long term in Indianapolis and have moved our headquarters to Indianapolis in 2017. Learn about our schools.
II. Direct Partner Strategy (2017+)
Launch our Accelerator in Washington, DC, partnering with 1-2 schools for an entire year in a planning year and then successive years as they launch our model in their own district and/or charter school. Based on the success of this 2017 launch, we will consider opening up our Accelerator to more schools and more cities in 2018. Learn about our accelerator.
III. Direct Run + Direct Partner Strategy (2018+)
Consider licensing our Spark technology platform to non-Matchbook Learning schools alongside a direct run charter restart in Indianapolis, to create a growing cohort of Spark users that access our learning management platform, the transformative competency-based, student centered methodology therein along with some customized, shorter-term design and implementation assistance. Learn about our Spark technology.
